Bandidos del Páramo: What’s your flavor?

“Where can you find good craft beer in Quito?” was the great conundrum Ryan Hood, one of the brewers behind Bandido Brewing, had years ago when he first came to the country. Today, the answer to the question is easy enough: the options for craft beer in the city are endless. But back in 2013, Ryan and his partner Nathan Keffer, landed on the best solution they could muster: make it themselves.

That same year, other brewmasters in Quito were also cooking up their own recipes. Uli Hahl and Stefan Nestler wanted to make typical German-style craft beer, which eventually became Páramo Brauhaus.

Quito didn’t know what was about to hit it…

Now when someone asks “Where can you find a good pint in Quito?” the list is invariably topped by Bandido Brewing. “We wanted good old Pale Ale American beer,” Ryan tells us. What started out as an amateur project for their and their friends’ pleasure, experimenting with Ecuadorian ingredients, soon became a career move with the creation of their now legendary Bandido Brewing in La Tola neighborhood

(located in an old house with an adjoining chapel… perhaps a place to confess the temptation of drowning in the beer?).

In 2016, they joined forces with Uli and Stefan and opened a new bar on Calle Whymper, a true temple for Quito beer drinkers: Bandidos del Páramo.

So, what is the conundrum today? Choice! How about a blonde with energy-giving guayusa (an Amazonian plant)? Or a stout with nibs of bittersweet cocoa from

Mindo… the Rio Negro? La Guapa or a Hop Rey? Or what about a stein of a reliably refreshing German blonde like the Weissbier Páramo or the amber Altbier…

The question, after all, is no longer where to find good beer… The question is which one you’ll be having tonight.
